Blogtober Day 8: Spooky Saturday

For this weeks spooky Saturday I thought I would focus on somewhere I have been………… The Palace Saloon in Fernandina Beach, Fl.

The Palace Saloon is the oldest bar in Florida! It was built in 1878 and then became a bar in the early 1900s. While a few ghosts are rumored to roam here, the most well-known is Uncle Charlie. Charlie lived in the building for over 50 years and served as a bartender. It is said that he still plays piano sometimes.

Be sure to watch this fun video depicting Charlie.

Blogtober Day 5: Wellness Wednesday

What does Wellness mean to you?

Per Oxford Languages, Wellness is the state of being in good health, especially as an actively pursued goal.

Per Wikipedia, Wellness is a state beyond absence of illness but rather aims to optimize well-being (quality of life).

The original six dimensions of wellness included intellectual, emotional, physical, social, occupational, and spiritual wellness. Later environmental and financial wellness were added to make eight dimensions of wellness.

Each week we will dive a little deeper into 2 dimensions and discuss ways to achieve or maintain wellness in that dimension.

Week 1:

Intellectual: Brain health, learning, creativity, memory, knowledge, skills.

Emotional: Coping, identifying personal feelings and handling them. Controlling feelings and behaviors, overcoming obstacles. National Institutes of Health describe emotional wellness as “the ability to successfully handle life’s stresses and adapt to change and difficult times” (NIH, 2018)

So, what are somethings we can do to achieve or maintain our intellectual and emotional wellness? Share in the comments.

I love to learn and read often which I think can be helpful to both dimensions.

Be Peaceful,

~Nettie

Blogtober Day 4: Tasty Tuesday

Tasty Tuesday is a day for us to share something tasty we had the previous week. This can be while eating out, a new recipe, or a twist on an old favorite.

Friday, I had taken chicken breast out but couldn’t figure out what I wanted to do with it. My mind kept going to something with bacon and ranch, but I also wanted something with a little spice. I cut up the chicken into 1/2 to 1-inch cubes and sautéed in olive oil, seasoned with cilantro-lime, chipotle powder, salt and cracked black pepper. I added a can of drained & rinsed pinto beans, a cup of frozen mixed veggies, a 1/2 cup instant rice and a 1/2 cup water. I brought to a boil then lowered too medium low until all the water was absorbed (about 20-25 minutes). I served it topped with 2 pieces of bacon crumbled on top, a splash of lite ranch dressing, and a sprinkle of cheese. It was very flavorful with a heat that builds but doesn’t overpower.

Do you like to experiment when you cook, play it safe, or don’t really like to cook? Do you follow recipes exactly or always make changes?

What did you eat last week that was super tasty?

Be Peaceful,

~Nettie

Blogtober Day 3: Motivated Monday

Mondays have a bad reputation. For those of us with the Monday – Friday work week, Monday means our weekend is over. Even for people that don’t have the Monday – Friday work week you still hear them say things like “I have a case of the Mondays”.

I think it’s time we break this thought process and start focusing on the great things Monday has to offer us! We can retrain ourselves to approach Monday in a positive light and let it be the source of our motivation for the week.

Mindset: Train my brain to see the bright side with a can-do attitude⠀
Opportunity: Say yes to adventures and changes⠀
Nourishment: Spoil my body with healthy food⠀
Doable steps: Focus on the next step instead of the whole staircase⠀
Authenticity: Be me and let my authentic self-attract my people⠀
Yay: Celebrate when the day is over, because- let’s be honest – Monday is a lot.

Blogtober Day 1: Spooky Saturday

Welcome to day 1 of Blogtober! I figured the best way to start this off was with a story about a local haunted house.

The May-Stinger House, located in Brooksville, is thought to be one of the most haunted houses in Florida. It was originally built in 1855 for John May and wife Marena then sold to Dr. Sheldon Stringer. After passing hands a few more times it was left abandoned. Finally, it was bought and then sold to The Hernando Historical Association.

This house is believed to have at least 11 ghosts. Including 3-year-old Jessie Mae. Jessie Mae’s mother, Marena, died during childbirth. Unfortunately, Jessie Mae’s cause of death is unknown.

A quick Google search revealed tales of seeing a baby crawling in the house, a child laughing, the sounds of a ball bouncing and much more, all thought to be little Jessie Mae.

This house is not only haunted by those that have died there but also by ghosts that are attached to the historical items displayed here.

This museum is open for visits and offers ghost tours. I have not been yet but hope to visit soon. If you have visited or have other stories related to this house, please share in the comments.

Did you grow up with ghost stories? Do you have a favorite? I would love to hear them.

Be Peaceful,

~Nettie
